It’s time to talk about our future. As you know, Darwin is Australia’s northern most Capital City. We sit on the edge of Asia and have a long history of successful engagement with our northern neighbours. With the rise of the Asian Middle Class we are ideally suited to capitalising on the opportunities this offers.
We have so much to offer the discerning traveller. As a city we should capitalise on the interest that is being shown from our nearest international neighbours as well as visitors from interstate.
As Lord Mayor I will take every opportunity to promote Darwin as the preferred place to visit. I will also encourage the establishment of walking and heritage trails to enhance the visitor’s experience and to tell the Darwin story.
I believe there is also an opportunity to develop further places of interest such as a working local artists centre, showcasing not just our rich Aboriginal cultural heritage but also the wonderfully unique and inspired artistic talent which exists in Darwin, with regular workshops and displays of artisans at work.
We have the capacity to reap the benefits from digital technologies and to lead the way in building our smart capacity. When the City takes over the lights and poles, brighter LED lights for safety and economy, movement detectors for efficient parking and more efficient and effective free WiFi in the CBD but also across Council properties, are just some of the opportunities this move could offer.
As Lord Mayor I will advocate for the adoption of smart tech that offers practical solutions and makes everyone’s lives better. I will also advocate for the development of an environment which encourages tech entrepreneurs to develop their leading ideas in Darwin.
As the Chairman of the Council for Capital City Lord Mayors last year I struck a deal with Prime Minister Turnbull that every Capital City who wants one will get a city deal.
I then worked closely with the Chief Minister to become the first Capital City to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Federal Government to deliver a City Deal. The details of the deal are being worked out right now.
As Lord Mayor I am determined that the whole city will reap the benefits of a City Deal. Whether it is a purpose built Library at Cavanagh St, a cooler city with the planting of new trees or the opening up of a University campus in the city, the whole city will benefit with an uplift in productivity.
I’m excited about the future of Darwin.
I know things have been tough for some but I also know our community is resilient and determined.
There are so many inspiring people in our wonderful town, many of whom I’ve had the privilege to meet and talk with. We all love Darwin and together I know we can work towards a positive, practical and bright future.
